Toyota Battery Testing and Replacement in Terrace, BC

Find out how much life your battery has left before a cold morning tells you. Testing and replacement for every Toyota, hybrids included.

Toyota and Lexus battery diagnostic tester connected in a service bay

A battery test measures what the battery can actually deliver, not just whether it holds a charge today.

Quick answer: Terrace Toyota tests and replaces Toyota batteries, including the 12-volt auxiliary battery in Toyota hybrids. A test shows how much cranking capacity is left, so you can replace a weak battery before winter instead of on the side of Highway 16. Book online, by text or at 250-635-6558, Monday to Friday.

Will my battery make it through the winter?

A battery that starts the car fine in September can fail on the first cold morning. Cold slows the chemistry inside the battery, so it has less power to give at exactly the moment the engine needs more to turn over thick, cold oil.

A test answers the question before the cold does. It measures what the battery can actually deliver compared to its rating, so a battery near the end of its life shows up weak even while it still starts the car.

What a battery test covers

1

Capacity test

What the battery can deliver compared to its rated cold cranking amps.

2

State of charge

Whether the battery is simply low, or worn out and unable to hold a charge.

3

Charging system

Whether the alternator or hybrid system is actually charging the battery.

4

Terminals and cables

Corrosion and loose connections that look like a dead battery but are not.

5

Hold-down and case

Cracks, swelling and a secure mount, so vibration does not shorten its life.

6

Replacement if needed

If the battery fails, we can replace it with one specified for your Toyota.

Toyota hybrids have a 12-volt battery too

A RAV4 Hybrid, Corolla Hybrid or Prius has two batteries. The large hybrid battery drives the electric motors. A conventional 12-volt auxiliary battery powers the computers, locks and lights, and wakes the hybrid system up when you press the power button.

If that small battery is weak, the hybrid will not go to READY, even though the big battery is fine. It is the most common reason a Toyota hybrid will not start, and it is a normal test-and-replace job.

Asking about the hybrid battery itself? That is covered on our Toyota scheduled maintenance and hybrid service page.

What drains batteries in Terrace

Cold mornings

Every cold start takes a big draw from the battery, and a winter of them takes a toll on an older battery.

Short trips

A quick run to town does not give the alternator enough time to put back what the start took out. Do that all week and the battery never fully recharges.

Vehicles that sit

A truck parked for a two-week rotation at camp, or a second vehicle that rarely moves, loses charge sitting still. Modern Toyotas draw a small amount of power even when off.

Our advice: have the battery tested when your winter tires go on. If it is weak, replace it in the fall rather than in a parking lot in January.

Toyota battery FAQs

How do I know if my Toyota battery is weak?
Slow cranking, dim lights at start-up, warning lights, or a vehicle that needed a boost are all signs. A battery test is the only way to know how much life is left before it fails.
How long does a car battery last?
It depends on the climate, how you drive and how often the vehicle sits. Cold winters and short trips shorten battery life. A test tells you where yours stands.
Why won't my Toyota hybrid start?
The most common cause is a weak 12-volt auxiliary battery. It powers the computers that start the hybrid system, so if it is low the vehicle will not go to READY even though the hybrid battery is fine.
Is the hybrid battery the same as the 12-volt battery?
No. The hybrid battery drives the electric motors. The 12-volt battery runs the accessories and starts the hybrid system. They are tested and serviced separately.
When should I get my battery tested?
Before winter. Having it tested at your fall tire changeover catches a weak battery before the first cold morning.
Can a dead battery just be recharged?
Sometimes. A test shows whether the battery is simply discharged or worn out and unable to hold a charge.
Do you replace batteries on Toyotas that were not bought here?
Yes. We service every Toyota, wherever it was purchased.
When is the service department open?
Service and Parts are open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. You can book online at any time or call 250-635-6558.
