Every brake visit starts with a service advisor who tells you what the inspection found before any work goes ahead.

Quick answer: Terrace Toyota's service department inspects and repairs Toyota brakes, including pad and rotor replacement, caliper service and brake fluid changes. Our technicians use Genuine Toyota Parts and the Toyota diagnostic tools hybrid brake systems require. Book online, by text or at 250-635-6558, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

What we check when you book a brake inspection

A brake inspection looks at the whole system, not just the pads you can see through the wheel. Here is what your technician measures and tests.

1

Pad thickness

Measured at every wheel, inner and outer pad, because they rarely wear evenly.

2

Rotor condition

Thickness against Toyota's minimum specification, plus scoring, rust lips and runout that cause a pulsing pedal.

3

Calipers and slide pins

Checked for free movement. A sticking pin wears one pad to the backing plate while the other looks new.

4

Brake fluid

Level and condition. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and softens the pedal.

5

Lines and hoses

Inspected for corrosion, cracking and leaks, the parts road salt attacks first.

6

Parking brake and warning lights

Parking brake hold and any stored brake or ABS codes read with Toyota diagnostic equipment.

Not sure you need brakes yet? Our guide covers the sounds, pedal feel and warning lights to watch for: how to tell when your Toyota needs brake service.

What actually wears out

Pads

Pads are the consumable. Every stop turns a little of the friction material into dust. How fast depends on your driving: short trips around town and heavy loads wear them quickest, long highway runs wear them slowest.

Rotors

Rotors wear too, just more slowly. Each set of pads takes a little metal with it. When a rotor drops below Toyota's minimum thickness, or rust and scoring have damaged the surface, it gets replaced with the pads. If the rotors are still within spec, they stay. You pay for what the measurements say, not a package.

Fluid

Brake fluid does not get used up, but it does wear out. It pulls moisture from the air, and wet fluid boils at a lower temperature. That shows up as a pedal that goes soft on a long downhill. Your Toyota's maintenance schedule sets the replacement interval, and we follow it.

Hardware

Clips, shims and slide pins keep the pads quiet and moving freely. In a wet, salted climate, this hardware causes more brake problems than the pads themselves.

Why hybrid brakes are different

Toyota now builds a hybrid version of most of its lineup, and hybrids brake differently. When you lift off the pedal in a RAV4 Hybrid, Corolla Cross Hybrid or Tundra i-FORCE MAX, the electric motor slows the vehicle first and recharges the battery. The friction brakes do far less of the work.

That is good news for pads, which often last much longer on a hybrid. The trade-off is that brakes that rarely get used can seize. Calipers and slide pins that sit through a Terrace winter without much work are the ones that stick. A hybrid with plenty of pad left still needs its brakes inspected and its hardware cleaned and lubricated.

Many Toyota hybrids also use an electronically controlled brake system that has to be put into service mode with Toyota's diagnostic tools before anyone opens up the brakes. That is standard procedure in our shop.

What a Skeena winter does to your brakes

Terrace brakes live a harder life than most. Long wet seasons, heavy snow and months of sand and salt on Highway 16 and Highway 37 all work on the same parts.

Rust on the rotors

A Toyota that sits for a few days in wet weather comes out with a coat of surface rust. That scrubs off in a few stops. Rust that builds up on the edge and the inner face of a rotor does not, and it pits the surface the pads ride on.

Seized slide pins

Salt spray gets into the caliper hardware. A pin that stops sliding drags one pad against the rotor all the time. You will notice it as a pull to one side, a hot wheel or one pad worn to metal.

Grades and trailers

A Tundra or Tacoma pulling a boat to Lakelse Lake, or a loaded 4Runner on the grades toward Kitimat and Hazelton, puts real heat into the brakes. Heat is what wears pads fastest and ages brake fluid.

Our advice: have the brakes inspected when your winter tires go on in the fall and again when they come off in the spring. The wheels are already off, so the technician can see everything.

Toyota brake service FAQs

How much does Toyota brake service cost in Terrace?
It depends on what the inspection finds. Pads alone cost less than pads and rotors, and a hybrid that only needs its hardware cleaned costs less again. Your service advisor goes over the findings and the cost with you before any work starts.
Do I need new rotors every time I replace the pads?
No. Your technician measures each rotor against Toyota's minimum thickness and checks it for rust, scoring and runout. Rotors that are within spec stay on the vehicle. Rotors that are too thin or damaged get replaced with the pads.
Why does my hybrid need brake service if the pads last longer?
Regenerative braking saves the pads, but brakes that are rarely used can seize, especially after a winter of road salt. Calipers and slide pins still need to be inspected, cleaned and lubricated, and many Toyota hybrids need Toyota diagnostic tools to put the brake system into service mode.
How often should I change my brake fluid?
Follow the interval in your Toyota's maintenance schedule. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. We check its condition at every brake inspection and let you know when it is due.
Can you inspect my brakes when I come in for my tire changeover?
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. The wheels are already off, so the technician can see the pads, rotors and calipers clearly. Mention it when you book your seasonal tire appointment.
Do you service Toyotas that weren't bought at Terrace Toyota?
Yes. We service every Toyota, wherever it was purchased, including older, high-kilometre vehicles.
Are brakes covered by my Toyota warranty?
Pads and rotors wear with normal use, so replacing them is normally not a warranty repair. A defect in a brake component is a different matter. Bring your vehicle in and we will check your warranty coverage and any open recalls.
When is the Terrace Toyota service department open?
Service and Parts are open Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and closed Saturday and Sunday. You can book online at any time or call 250-635-6558.
