When do you need winter tires in Terrace?

BC requires winter tires on most northern highways, including Highway 16, from October 1 to April 30. West of Terrace toward Prince Rupert, the requirement ends on March 31. If you drive to Kitimat, Smithers or the Nass, check DriveBC for your route before you go.

To count as a winter tire in BC, a tire needs at least 3.5 mm of tread and either the M+S mark or the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. The mountain snowflake tire is the one to have. M+S all-seasons are legal, but they harden in the cold and give up grip on packed snow and ice long before a true winter tire does.

What a changeover includes

1

Swap and mount

Your winter or summer set installed, whether it is already on rims or needs mounting.

2

Balance

Wheels balanced so the steering does not shake at highway speed.

3

Tread and damage check

Tread measured against the 3.5 mm legal minimum and sidewalls checked for cuts and bulges.

4

Pressure set cold

Pressures set to the placard on your door jamb, not the maximum on the sidewall.

5

TPMS

The tire pressure monitoring system checked, so the warning light means something again.

6

Torque to spec

Wheel nuts torqued to Toyota specification. Have them re-checked after the first 50 to 100 km.

Rotations, balancing and alignment

Rotation

Front tires wear faster than rears on most Toyotas because they steer and carry the engine. Rotating them at the intervals in your maintenance schedule evens that out and makes a set last longer. A changeover is a natural time to do it.

Balancing

A vibration that comes in around highway speed is usually a wheel out of balance. It gets worse as tires wear, and it wears the tires unevenly in return.

Alignment

Potholes, frost heaves and gravel-road ruts knock alignment out. If your Toyota pulls, the steering wheel sits off-centre, or the inside edge of a tire is wearing faster than the rest, ask for an alignment check with your changeover.

TPMS and winter wheels on a Toyota

Toyotas use a tire pressure monitoring system with a sensor in each wheel. If your winter set is on wheels without sensors, the warning light will stay on all winter, and the system cannot warn you about a slow leak. When you buy a winter wheel package, ask for sensors.

Cold weather also drops tire pressure. A set that was right in September can be low by the first cold snap, which is often why the TPMS light comes on in October. Check pressures when the temperature falls.

While the wheels are off

A changeover is the best look a technician gets at your brakes all year: pads, rotors and calipers are right there. Ask for a brake check at the same visit.

What counts as a winter tire in BC?
A tire with at least 3.5 mm of tread and either the M+S mark or the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. Mountain snowflake tires grip far better in cold, snow and ice.
When should I book my winter tire changeover?
Book in September or early October. Once the first snow hits Highway 16, changeover appointments fill quickly.

Either your winter wheels do not have pressure sensors, or the cold has dropped the pressure. We can check which one it is and set it right.
How often should I rotate my Toyota's tires?
Follow the rotation interval in your Toyota's maintenance schedule. A seasonal changeover is also a good time to rotate.
Do I need an alignment?
If your Toyota pulls to one side, the steering wheel is off-centre, or a tire is wearing on one edge, have the alignment checked. Potholes and frost heaves are the usual cause.
